Vienna International Airport is located approximately 18 kilometres southeast of the city centre. There are several ways to get from there into Vienna — but not all of them are equally suited to every situation. Depending on the time of day, your luggage, travel group and budget, the differences are real. This article compares all options honestly.
Option 1: Private airport transfer (fixed price)
A private transfer service like Vienna Driver picks you up directly in the arrivals hall — with a name sign, no searching, no waiting outside. From there you travel directly to your address in Vienna, with no transfers and no dragging luggage through the city.
Cost: From €39 for the 1st district — fixed price, including VAT, parking fees and airport entry fee. No surcharge for traffic or flight delays.
Travel time: 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.
Availability: 24/7 — including 3 AM, including public holidays.
Ideal for: Travellers with luggage, families with children, business travellers, early and late flights.
Option 2: City Airport Train (CAT)
The CAT is a direct train between the airport and Wien Mitte (Landstraße) — no stops, 16 minutes.
Cost: €14.90 one way (2026).
Travel time: 16 minutes to Wien Mitte.
Departures: Every 30 minutes, daily 6:09 AM–11:39 PM.
Downside: Doesn’t run at night. Terminates at Wien Mitte — you still need the U-Bahn or another taxi to reach your hotel. Impractical with lots of luggage or children.
Option 3: S-Bahn (S7)
The S7 runs from the airport via several stops to Wien Mitte and further into the city. The cheapest option — but also the slowest and busiest.
Cost: €4.30 (Vienna core zone + airport zone).
Travel time: Approx. 30 minutes to Wien Mitte.
Departures: Every 30 minutes, approx. 5:00 AM–midnight.
Downside: Multiple stops, crowded during peak hours, impractical with large luggage or a stroller. Significantly reduced or unavailable at night.
Option 4: Vienna Airport Lines (bus)
Several bus lines connect the airport with different parts of Vienna — Westbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof and Mödling.
Cost: €9.00 one way.
Travel time: 30–45 minutes depending on the line and traffic.
Departures: Every 30 minutes, approx. 5:00 AM–midnight.
Downside: Does not go directly to your hotel, uncomfortable with luggage, not available at night.
Option 5: Regular taxi (meter)
Regular taxis are available at Vienna Airport around the clock. The price varies depending on traffic and time of day — typically €35–65 for the city centre, more with a night surcharge.
Downside: No fixed price — you find out the final amount on arrival. Significantly more expensive in traffic or at night.
Option 6: Ride-hailing (Uber)
Uber is available at Vienna Airport but uses dynamic pricing. During high demand — Monday mornings, the start of school holidays, bad weather, night — prices rise automatically. What shows as €35 at the time of request can be €55 at confirmation.
Downside: No fixed price, child seats not guaranteed, availability limited at night. A detailed comparison is available in our article Vienna Airport Taxi vs. Uber.

At night: when most options disappear
After midnight, neither the CAT nor the S7 runs regularly, and the airport buses stop operating. Regular taxis are available but without a fixed price and with a night surcharge. Uber uses dynamic pricing — at night with limited driver availability, often significantly more expensive than during the day.
A pre-booked private transfer is the only option that combines a fixed price, guaranteed availability and a waiting driver in the arrivals hall at night. More on this in our article on night flights and early morning departures.
With family or a group: who is really cheaper?
For a family with two children, a stroller and four suitcases, the S-Bahn is theoretically the cheapest option — in practice, it’s hardly manageable. A Vienna Driver van accommodates up to 7 passengers with luggage, at a fixed price that divides among the group. Split four or five ways, the difference compared to public transport is often smaller than expected — with considerably more comfort. Full details in our article on family and group transfers.
Our verdict
For solo travellers with light luggage during the day, the S-Bahn is the cheapest option and the CAT the fastest. For travellers with luggage, families, business travellers, or anyone arriving at night or early in the morning, a private fixed-price transfer is the most reliable — and often surprisingly competitive — choice.
Vienna Driver offers airport transfers from €39 for the 1st district — fixed price, 24/7, picked up directly at your door.
